YouTube Tips and Tricks

YouTube is huge and here to stay. Did you know?

  • 48 hours of video are uploaded every minute, resulting in nearly 8 years of content uploaded every day

  • Over 3 billion videos are viewed a day

  • Users upload the equivalent of 240,000 full-length films every week

  • More video is uploaded to YouTube in one month than the 3 major US networks created in 60 years

Here are some tips and tricks to make sure you are getting the most of your YouTube experience!

Find it
As with Google and other search engines, use quotation marks around key words to narrow results. You can also search using “INTITLE:term” to specify that your key word appears in the video’s title. Here’s some other ways you can target videos in search:

If you know even approximately how recently the video was uploaded you can add "today," "this week" or "this month" to narrow down results. “Short” in the query looks for videos that are less than 4 minutes; “long” looks for those that are 20 minutes or more.

You can search for high definition or three-dimensional videos with “HD” and “3D” respectively.

You can also add channels or playlists to the search to query
Adding "channels" or "playlists" to your search query returns such results.

Watch it Now
Did you know you can change the size and resolution of the videos on YouTube? YouTube used to have the standard window in screen viewing or you could switch to full screen, which often diminished the video resolution. You can still change the standard size to full screen by clicking on the “full screen” icon – or you can now view the video in a large size which doesn’t fill the entire screen by clicking on the large rectangle icon.

The settings icon will allow you to change the resolution count, or you can change your account settings to default to HD – high definition – when watching videos in full screen. Set this under “Playback Setup” in the “Settings” menu.

Watch it Later
The “Add to” button under the standard screen allows you to save videos to watch later on by saving them to your favorites or to a designated playlist. These favorites and playlists appear when you click on your user name on YouTube in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.

Manage it
YouTube offers "My Viewing History" to manage your video:

Shortcuts
YouTube offers some handy and easy keyboard shortcuts you can use while watching videos:

Spacebar – pause/play

Arrow keys – Rewind (left arrow key) and Fast Forward (right arrow key)

Volume – up or down (up and down arrows)

Home key – beginning of the video

End key – end of the video

Leanback

TestTube
At the very bottom of any YouTube page is a link called, “Try something new!” This takes you to “TestTube,” YouTube’s ideas incubator,” described as “where YouTube engineers and developers test out recipes and concoctions that aren't quite fully baked.” Incubating in the TestTube is a game called "YouTube Slam” which lets you rate videos by category: Comedy Slam | Dance Slam | Cute Slam | Bizarre Slam | Music Slam

What's Hot

Pinterest is
a virtual pinboard — a place where you can create collections of things you love and "follow" collections created by people with great taste.

People use Pinterest to collect and share all sorts of things -- wedding inspiration, favorite T-shirts, DJ equipment. You name it, people are pinning it.

Home décor, recipes, quotes and hilarious photos, crafty things, cool electronics, and yes, funny, adorable cats. The Internet loves cats. And now you can “pin” them.
